Basic Music Theory

This course is designed to provide students with a foundational understanding of the fundamental concepts and principles of music theory.

This course is designed to provide students with a foundational understanding of the fundamental concepts and principles of music theory. It covers essential topics such as notation, rhythm, pitch, scales, and chords, enabling students to develop a strong musical foundation.

Throughout the course, students will learn how to read and interpret musical notation, including understanding the staff, clefs, note values, and time signatures. They will also explore the concept of rhythm and learn how to identify and create different rhythmic patterns.

The course introduces students to the concept of pitch and the musical alphabet, helping them understand how notes are named and organized on the musical staff. Students will learn about scales, including major and minor scales, and how to construct and identify them.

Additionally, the course covers the basics of chords and chord progressions. Students will learn about triads, seventh chords, and common chord progressions, allowing them to understand the harmonic structure of music.

Practical exercises and quizzes are incorporated throughout the course to reinforce learning and provide students with opportunities to apply their knowledge. By the end of the course, students will have a solid understanding of basic music theory concepts, enabling them to read and interpret sheet music, understand musical terminology, and lay the groundwork for further exploration in the field of music.

The uses of music in our society, the importance of music in human communities, why music is considered a universal language, African and Western Musical instruments

Module 3 Staff Notation: the musical alphabets, musical notes, lines and space, bar lines, double bar lines, the clefs and grand staff. Exercises

Module 4 Major and scales and circle of fifths: key signature of major and relative minor keys, Scale degrees and roman numerals

Module 5 Triads (major and minors) intervals and their invasions 1, rhythmic shorthand

Module 6 Time signature: simple and compound time

Module 7 Aural Culture and sight reading: rhythm and monotones, melody writing from dictation, reading music in Tonic solfa Notations

Module 8 History of African and Western Music: the antiquities, the renaissance period. General characteristics of the period, musical futures of the period, and major composers of the period

Module 9 Applied Music
